Static electricity is generated by two non-metallic surfaces rubbing together. Common sources are carpets, plastic-surface desks, clothing, painted surfaces and plastic coffee cups.

The biggest single cause of static is a dry atmosphere, and this is more apparent in offices, with little outside ventilation and a high ambient temperature. This is particularly so during Winter months, when the atmosphere can be surprisingly dry because most heating systems are turned up full and windows are kept shut.
