ZINC
WHISKERS?

What
are ZINC WHISKERS?
ZINC WHISKERS are small
particles of zinc that grow in sub floors on the underside of certain
computer room floor tiles that are made using compressed zinc. A
number of our customers have had problems with burnt out power supplies
due to zinc whiskers. Harmless to humans, they are deadly to electrical
components such as motherboards, data cards and power supplies.
Once dislodged they become airborne in the computer room environment
and get sucked into equipment through power supplies where electrical
arching occurs.
|
Why
have I not heard of ZINC WHISKERS?
While the electronics
industry has been aware of the threat of these conductive whiskers
for many years, older electronic designs were less susceptible.
As technology became more sophisticated, circuits became much smaller
and denser and operated at lower voltages. Higher voltages vaporize
the whiskers. The growth of whiskers is not new but the ability
to create problems in new technology is increased.

What
to do?
Ultimately, the best
thing to do is replace all the tiles in the room. This can be a
very costly exercise for some of the companies out there with larger
rooms.
Luckily, BACS IT PROTECTION has
developed a method of cleaning which can keep the whiskers to an
acceptable level.
BACS trained personnel will come in, isolate your room and carry
out our specialised procedure. We recommend that this procedure
should be done every 6 months.
This is an efficient
and cost effective way of protecting your valuable assets.
