Looks Matter - Scrub-Washing Floors
WHY YOU NEED TO DO IT
Discolouration, scuff marks and dirt residue build up on floors over time, leaving their surface unclean and making the entire facility seem poorly maintained.
Routine damp-mopping is intended for dust removal and won’t budge heavy marks or improve the look of an ageing floor
WHY PEOPLE AVOID DOING IT
Many data centre operators are rightly concerned about the use of water in technical spaces.
Unfortunately, dry-buffing a floor does not remove all contamination - it could even damage floor surfaces.
Spot-treating may sound like a good idea until you view the floor from a distance and see all the lighter areas where marks were removed.
HOW TO MINIMISE YOUR RISK
Arrange professional scrub-washing for your data halls, corridors, warehouse, loading dock and other heavy traffic areas to enhance their appearance and make routine cleaning easier.
- Make sure your service provider uses minimal and controlled amounts of liquid so none comes in contact with moisture-sensitive areas or seeps between raised access floor tiles into the sub-floor.
- Select the correct abrasion level for the scrub pad so marks, staining and spots are effectively cleaned off without scratching the floor or pulling loose tile edge trim.
- Use a walk-behind scrubber on large areas of vinyl or sealed concrete.
- Use a rotary polisher for raised access floors and open areas in smaller rooms.
- Scrub-wash by hand all floor sections near racks and electronic equipment as well as corners and difficult-to-access areas.
- Have a two-person team where one person operates the floor scrubber or rotary polisher and the other carefully controls the cleaning liquid and mops up residue promptly.
- Fully remove the cleaning liquid and any sticky residue to avoid leaving streaks when the floor dries.
- Make sure all mop and splash marks are cleaned from rack bottoms, skirting boards and walls.
- Incorporate regular scrub-washes into your planned maintenance schedule to keep all floors looking their best.
- Use practical experience to adjust scrub-wash frequency since each floor is different and room traffic can vary dramatically.
